SUMMIT AGENDA

IPv6 TUTORIAL

Monday, December 8

8:30 – 10:15 am - Session 1: Developing IPv6: Mike Brig

For almost half a decade numerous stories have circulated regarding the drivers for IPv6 development and adoption. This session will identify the definitive rationale for a new Internet protocol, a brief history of the development process, and a comprehensive outline of the primary features and technological benefits offered by the next-generation IP.

10:30 – 12:00 pm – Session 2: Exploring IPv6: Mike Brig

Twenty years of usage and growth has yielded a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience around IP. In this session, participants will discover how the crafters of IPv6 have leveraged the lessons learned with IPv4 and built “a better mousetrap”. Topics will include detailed examples of how the IPv6 packet has been optimized, how the address architecture was defined to meet the growing needs of the Internet, and the many ways by which an interface can obtain an IPv6 address.

13:00 – 14:30 – Session 3: Integrating IPv6: Mike Brig

Without a doubt, the process of integrating IPv6 into the existing global infrastructure will be a task full of challenges. And, it is no secret that both IPv6 and IPv4 will have years, if not decades, of coexistence. During this session participants will be introduced the various transition mechanisms essential to the adoption process, including tunnels, 6to4, ISATAP, and NAT-PT. Additionally, integration will require upgrades to key network applications (e.g. DNS) which are also covered in this session.

14:45 – 16:00 - Session 4: Advanced IPv6 Topics: Brian McGehee

Some of the critical drivers for IPv6 adoption come not in the expansion of IP address space, but how IPv6 will support the growing reliance on IP. Both the commercial and government sectors are pushing their base services onto packet-switched network, driving a need for improvements in Quality of Service (QoS), security, and mobility. In this session, we will discuss the realities of QoS support in IPv6, how the IP security model will be impacted by the IPv6 specification and the elimination of NAT, and the fundamental differences in Mobile IP v4/v6.

16:10 – 17:00 – Session 5: Deploying IPv6: Mike Brig

Although the DoD mandate for IPv6 adoption is only 6 month old, IPv6 deployment has been occurring throughout the world for many years. In addition to numerous test platform deployments, there exist numerous commercial IPv6 networks! This capstone session will highlight how IPv6 has been deployed, the current trends in deployment, and include detailed dialogue on the lesson garnered by IPv6 deployment pioneers. Discussions will also include platform and application support for IPv6.
